Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) Price per Carat: Real Examples from Our Stock

Kumud Fine Jewellery ·
Quick answer: In India, a certified yellow sapphire (Pukhraj / Pushparagam) can cost anywhere from about ₹1,500 to over ₹60,000 per carat. Price depends mostly on colour, clarity, treatment (unheated, heated or glass-filled) and origin. In our own stock of 126 yellow sapphires (October 2026), the median price was about ₹22,700 per carat including GST.

Price questions about Pukhraj are hard to answer because two stones of the same size can differ in price by 40 times or more. So instead of a generic price chart, here are eight real, certified stones from our collection, from the cheapest to the most expensive, with what their lab certificates say.

Prices as of 22 October 2026, including 3% GST. Prices change, so the product page always shows the current price.

What our full stock shows

Across all 126 yellow sapphires in our collection on 22 October 2026:

  • Origin: about 60% from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), 25% from Thailand, and the rest not stated.
  • Size: 0.68 to 3.91 carats, with half between about 1.5 and 2.5 carats.
  • Two clear price groups:
    • Budget stones (₹1,500–3,000 per carat): 26 stones, most with no origin stated and the rest mainly Thai. 18 of them are glass-filled, and the rest are heated, paler stones.
    • Main collection (₹11,000–60,000 per carat): 100 stones, mostly Sri Lankan, including our unheated stones.
  • By origin: Sri Lankan stones had a median of about ₹30,000 per carat, and Thai stones about ₹20,000 per carat (before GST).

What drives the price of a yellow sapphire

  1. Colour, the biggest factor. A bright, evenly saturated golden yellow is worth far more than a pale lemon or a brownish yellow. Our lot CYS065 is unheated and Sri Lankan, but it's light in colour, so it costs less than a heated stone with a stronger yellow (3794).
  2. Treatment.
    • Unheated stones of good colour are the rarest and most expensive (our top tier, ₹36,000–62,000 per carat).
    • Heated stones are natural sapphires whose colour has been improved by heating. This is common, permanent and accepted, and they cost less than unheated stones of the same look.
    • Glass-filled stones have cracks filled with glass. They are the cheapest and the least durable, and they're not usually chosen for astrological purposes. Always check the certificate's "Comments" line.
  3. Origin. Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the classic source of bright yellow sapphires and usually commands more than Thailand. A stone's own colour, clarity and treatment still matter more than origin alone.
  4. Clarity. Fewer visible inclusions mean a brighter stone and a higher price.
  5. Size. Larger stones of the same quality cost more per carat, not just in total.
  6. Cut. A well-cut stone shows its colour evenly and has fewer dark or "washed-out" areas.

How to buy a Pukhraj with confidence

  • Ask for the lab certificate before you pay, and read the Comments line for treatment. See: How to read a gemstone certificate.
  • Compare stones by price per carat, not just total price.
  • See the stone on video in daylight. Colour is everything with yellow sapphire.
  • If you're buying for astrological reasons, follow your astrologer's guidance on weight and quality.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of yellow sapphire per carat in India?

Certified yellow sapphires range from about ₹1,500 per carat for heated, pale or glass-filled stones to over ₹60,000 per carat for fine, unheated Sri Lankan stones. In our stock (October 2026), the median was about ₹22,700 per carat including GST.

Why is unheated yellow sapphire more expensive?

Because fine colour without heating is rare. Most yellow sapphires on the market have been heated to improve their colour.

Is heated yellow sapphire natural?

Yes. A heated yellow sapphire is a natural stone that has been heated after mining. The certificate will say "natural" and note the heat treatment.

What is a glass-filled yellow sapphire?

A natural sapphire whose cracks have been filled with glass to improve its look. It costs much less and is less durable. The certificate says "Indication of glass filling".

Is Ceylon yellow sapphire better than Thai yellow sapphire?

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the best-known source of bright yellow sapphires, and Sri Lankan stones usually cost more. Compare the individual stone's colour, clarity and treatment as well as its origin.
