Cat's Eye

Cat's Eye

Lehsunia Stone

Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) is a remarkable chrysoberyl gemstone recognised by its distinctive chatoyancy — a luminous band of light that glides across the surface, resembling the slit eye of a cat. This optical phenomenon makes it one of the most visually unique gemstones. In Vedic astrology, Cat's Eye represents Ketu — the South Node of the Moon — and is believed to ward off evil spirits, bring sudden wealth, and aid in spiritual growth. Sri Lanka, Brazil, and India are primary sources of fine Cat's Eye.

About Cat's Eye

Cat's Eye, known as Lehsunia or Vaidurya in Hindi, is the gemstone of Ketu (the South Node of the Moon) in Vedic astrology. It belongs to the Chrysoberyl mineral family and is famous for its unique optical phenomenon called "chatoyancy" — a bright, silky band of light that moves across the surface, resembling a cat's eye. The finest Cat's Eye gemstones come from Sri Lanka, Brazil, and India. This remarkable stone is believed to provide protection, spiritual insight, and liberation from past karma.

Who Should Wear Cat's Eye?

Cat's Eye is recommended for those undergoing Ketu Mahadasha or Antardasha. It is beneficial when Ketu is placed in favourable houses. Pisces and Sagittarius ascendants may benefit. Like Blue Sapphire, Cat's Eye is a fast-acting stone — a trial period of 3 days is advised before permanent wear.

How to Wear Cat's Eye

  • Metal: Silver or Panch Dhatu
  • Finger: Middle finger or little finger of the right hand
  • Day & Time: Tuesday or Saturday, during Ketu Hora
  • Weight: Minimum 3 carats for astrological purpose
  • Mantra: "Om Kem Ketave Namaha" (108 times)

Quality Factors

The most valued Cat's Eye stones display a sharp, well-defined chatoyant band (eye) that moves smoothly across the surface. Honey-yellow to greenish-yellow stones with a milk-and-honey effect (one side light, one side dark) are most prized. The eye should be centred and straight. Sri Lankan chrysoberyl cat's eye is considered the finest.

Care & Cleaning

Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye has a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, making it very durable. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals. The stone is suitable for everyday wear due to its hardness. Store separately to maintain the polished surface that best displays the chatoyancy.

Price Guide

Cat's Eye (Chrysoberyl) prices range from ₹3,000 to ₹50,000 per carat for fine quality stones. Exceptional specimens with a sharp eye, milk-and-honey effect, and large size can command even higher prices. Quartz cat's eye is much cheaper but is not a substitute for Chrysoberyl in astrological use.

Buyer Beware

Quartz Cat's Eye and synthetic Chrysoberyl are commonly sold as natural Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye. Glass fiber-optic cat's eye is a cheap imitation. Always insist on certification specifying "Natural Chrysoberyl" — not just "Cat's Eye," which could be any chatoyant stone. The sharp, well-defined eye of genuine Chrysoberyl is hard to replicate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes the cat's eye effect?
The chatoyancy is caused by parallel needle-like inclusions of rutile within the Chrysoberyl crystal that reflect light in a concentrated band.

Can Cat's Eye and Hessonite be worn together?
Yes, they represent Ketu and Rahu respectively and can complement each other when both planets need strengthening.
