Blue Sapphire (Neelam) Price per Carat: Ceylon vs Burma, Heated vs Unheated
Blue sapphire (Neelam) is one of the most popular astrological gemstones, and also one of the most confusing to buy, because two "blue sapphires" of the same size can differ in price by 100 times or more. Here's what 187 certified blue sapphires in our collection show, with every stone's treatment read from its IGTL laboratory certificate.

Why the prices differ so much
1. Treatment
- Unheated sapphires keep the colour nature gave them. Fine unheated stones are rare, and they cost the most within any origin.
- Heated sapphires are natural stones whose colour or clarity was improved by heating. This is common, permanent and accepted, and they cost less than comparable unheated stones.
- Beryllium-diffused sapphires were heated with beryllium so the colour changes deep into the stone. It's a major treatment, and these stones are priced far lower: about ₹1,200–1,500 per carat in our stock.
2. Origin
- Ceylon (Sri Lanka) sapphires are known for bright, lively cornflower-to-royal blues and good clarity.
- Burmese sapphires are known for deep, rich blues. Most of ours are unheated.
- Thai material in our stock is mainly the budget, diffusion-treated group.
3. Colour, clarity, size and cut
Within each group, an even, vivid blue with good transparency costs more than an inky dark, greyish or very pale stone. Larger stones cost more per carat, and a good cut shows the colour evenly.

How to choose a blue sapphire
- Read the certificate's Comments line: unheated, heated or diffusion-treated. See Gemstone treatments explained.
- Compare price per carat within the same treatment and origin group.
- See it on video in daylight. Blue sapphires can look very different under different lights.
- For astrological use, follow your astrologer's guidance on weight and quality. Many astrologers prefer natural stones without major treatments.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of blue sapphire (Neelam) per carat in India?
In our certified stock (October 2026), prices ranged from about ₹1,200 per carat for beryllium-diffused stones to over ₹3 lakh per carat for an exceptional Ceylon stone. Unheated Ceylon stones had a median of about ₹36,000 per carat.
Is Ceylon or Burma blue sapphire better?
Both are prized. Ceylon stones are known for brighter blues, and Burmese stones for deeper blues. The individual stone's colour, clarity and treatment matter more than origin alone.
What does "unheated" mean for a blue sapphire?
The laboratory found no indication that the stone was heated to improve its colour. Fine unheated sapphires are rarer and cost more.
Why are some blue sapphires so cheap?
Very low prices usually mean a major treatment, such as beryllium diffusion, or lower-quality material. The certificate's Comments line tells you which.
Is heated blue sapphire natural?
Yes. A heated sapphire is a natural stone that has been heated after mining. The certificate says "natural" and notes the heat treatment.
