18K vs 22K Gold for Gemstone Jewellery: Which Should You Choose?

Kumud Fine Jewellery ·
Quick answer: 22K gold is 91.6% pure (hallmark 916). It has a rich yellow colour but is softer. 18K gold is 75% pure (hallmark 750). It's harder, holds stones more securely and costs less per gram. For pieces with many small stones, like a Navratna necklace or bracelet, 18K is usually the better choice. For plain gold or single-stone pieces, many families in South India prefer 22K.

Why most gemstone jewellery is made in 18K

Gemstones are held by small prongs, bezels or settings. Softer 22K gold can bend over time, which can loosen a stone. 18K gold, alloyed with stronger metals, keeps settings tight. That's why most diamond and multi-stone jewellery, in India and abroad, is made in 18K.

How purity affects price

Jewellery is priced on gold weight × the gold rate for that purity. On the days we checked our own product pages in October 2026, the price breakups used about ₹13,390 per gram for 22K (21 Oct) and ₹10,829 per gram for 18K (22 Oct). Rates change daily, but the gap stays roughly in proportion to the gold content. See how jewellery prices are calculated.

Which purity Kumud uses

  • Navratna necklaces, earrings and bracelets: 18K yellow gold, which holds the nine stones securely.
  • Gents' Navratna malas: 22K yellow gold, for a richer traditional look.
  • Gemstone rings and pendants: mostly 22K yellow gold, with options in rose and white gold on many designs. The product page shows each piece's exact purity.

What about white and rose gold?

White and rose gold are yellow gold mixed with other metals that change the colour. Because they need more alloy, they're usually made in 18K or lower. Their purity is still marked on the hallmark.

Exchange and resale

At exchange or buy-back, gold is valued on its weight and purity at that day's rate. A higher-purity piece contains more gold per gram. At Kumud, gemstone jewellery is valued on its metal weight under our Return, Exchange & Buy-back Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is 22K or 18K better for a gemstone ring?

For a single stone in a strong setting, either works. 22K gives a richer colour, while 18K is more durable for everyday wear and small prongs.

Why are Navratna necklaces made in 18K gold?

Because they hold many small stones. 18K is harder than 22K, so the settings stay tight and the stones stay secure.

What does 916 mean on gold?

916 is the BIS hallmark purity mark for 22K gold: 91.6% pure gold. 18K gold is marked 750.

Is 18K gold real gold?

Yes. 18K gold is 75% pure gold, mixed with other metals for strength and colour.

Is 18K gold cheaper than 22K?

Yes. It contains less gold per gram, so its rate per gram is lower.
